  • Chartered Marketer

She brings academic rigour without losing sight of commercial reality—and strategic ambition without overlooking implementation.

Aviation, Airports and the Future Aerotropolis

Aviation, Airports and the Future Aerotropolis

Dr Bulatovic’s aviation portfolio focuses on the future of airports, airport cities, passenger experience, aviation resilience and airport-led economic development.

She is currently undertaking postdoctoral studies at the University of the Aegean, researching aerotropolis development in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha.

Her work critically examines whether traditional aerotropolis models remain practical in an environment shaped by artificial intelligence, sustainability requirements, changing passenger behaviour, infrastructure pressure and the growing need for operational and economic resilience.

Dr Bulatovic is the co-author of Airport City and Aerotropolis: Concepts and Implications for Development, published by Emerald in Advances in Airline Economics.

Her continuing work includes From Infrastructure to Intelligence: A Four-Layer Framework for the Next Generation Aerotropolis, developed for the Air Transport Research Society World Conference. The framework examines how infrastructure, connectivity, digital intelligence and stakeholder integration can shape the next generation of airport-centred development.

Current Aviation Research and Advisory Portfolio

Dr Bulatovic is currently working on multiple applied aviation projects intended to generate practical solutions for airport leaders, operators and passenger-experience teams.

Managing Passengers During Flight Delays

Her current research tests how airports can communicate with and guide passengers more effectively during delays.

The work examines whether clearer, more useful and appropriately personalised guidance can:

  • reduce perceived waiting time;

  • decrease uncertainty and negative emotional responses;

  • strengthen passengers’ sense of control;

  • protect airport satisfaction and trust;

  • encourage more constructive use of airport dwell time; and

  • improve the overall disruption experience.

The objective is to help airports move beyond generic delay announcements and introduce communication that supports passengers emotionally, operationally and practically.

Developing Passenger-Experience Playbooks

Dr Bulatovic is developing practical frameworks and airport passenger-experience playbooks that translate research, observation and service-quality analysis into clear actions.

These playbooks are designed to support improvements across the passenger journey, including:

  • airport access and arrival;

  • orientation and wayfinding;

  • check-in and baggage processes;

  • security and immigration;

  • waiting and dwell environments;

  • retail and dining engagement;

  • gate and boarding experiences;

  • arrivals and baggage reclaim; and

  • disruption communication and recovery.

The focus is not only on identifying what passengers dislike. It is on helping airport teams understand why friction occurs, how passengers respond and which improvements should be prioritised.

Examining Aviation Resilience

A further area of focus is resilience across airport operations, air traffic systems, passenger communication and service delivery.

Her work considers how aviation organisations can prepare for disruption, maintain trust, protect service continuity and recover without compromising the passenger experience.

This research is supported by her published work on high-reliability organisations in air traffic control, airport quality and aviation management.

Supporting Regional Airport Excellence

Dr Bulatovic has a particular interest in helping regional and secondary airports achieve excellence without attempting to imitate the size, complexity or investment capacity of major international hubs.

Regional airports can compete by understanding their passengers more deeply, reducing unnecessary friction, strengthening local relevance and delivering a distinctive experience that larger airports may struggle to replicate.

The goal is to help these airports identify where they can outperform larger competitors, strengthen their market position and build service standards aligned with their routes, passenger profiles and available resources.

Tourism and Destination Strategy

Tourism is not secondary to Dr Bulatovic’s aviation work. It is one of the foundations of her professional identity and expertise.

Her tourism expertise portfolio spans:

  • destination strategy and development;

  • tourism marketing and positioning;

  • destination competitiveness;

  • visitor behaviour, satisfaction and loyalty;

  • sustainable tourism development;

  • tourism-demand analysis;

  • aviation and tourism connectivity;

  • hospitality performance and service quality;

  • community support for tourism;

  • experience and tourism-product development; and

  • strategic growth for tourism organisations.

She helps destinations and tourism organisations determine where they can compete, which markets they should prioritise and how their natural, cultural, commercial and community assets can be transformed into viable tourism propositions.

Her research and applied projects have addressed farm tourism, medical tourism, sustainable tourism, visitor satisfaction, destination competitiveness, community attitudes, tourism demand and tourism’s contribution to regional economic development.

Her approach combines destination identity with market demand.

The objective is not simply to attract more visitors. It is to attract the right visitors, create stronger experiences, generate sustainable value and strengthen the destination’s long-term competitive position.

Special-Interest Tourism Expertise

Dr Bulatovic brings particularly strong expertise in special-interest tourism: experiences designed around a traveller’s specific passion, lifestyle, purpose or motivation.

Her work encompasses:

  • Cultural and heritage tourism

  • Ecotourism and nature-based tourism

  • Wellness and medical tourism

  • Farm and rural tourism

  • Gastronomic and experiential tourism

  • Luxury and shopping tourism

  • Religious and halal tourism

  • Sports and adventure tourism

  • Gaming (Casino) tourism

At the Higher Colleges of Technology, she leads the development and delivery of Special Interest Tourism, aligning academic content and applied projects with emerging market trends and industry needs.

Hospitality, Marketing and Commercial Strategy

Dr Bulatovic’s expertise extends beyond aviation and tourism development.

As a Certified Hotel Industry Analyst and Chartered Marketer, she brings hospitality performance, strategic marketing and customer-experience thinking into every engagement.

Her work is focused on addressing questions such as:

  • How should we position our airport, destination or hospitality concept?

  • Which passenger or visitor segments offer the strongest opportunity?

  • Where are customers experiencing unnecessary friction?

  • How can service quality be converted into loyalty and commercial value?

  • Which tourism concepts have realistic market potential?

  • How should an experience be differentiated from competitors?

  • What should be prioritised first?

  • How can research be translated into a practical strategy?

This multidisciplinary perspective allows her to examine both the operational and commercial sides of the customer journey.
